Travel Tip: Avoiding a Fine When Going Through U.S. Customs

Ramsey Qubein of AFAR Magazine reports that, going through U.S. Customs with something as seemingly innocent as an apple or a handmade souvenir, could result in negative consequences.

Qubein notes that there may be more “forbidden” items than we realize. Click HERE to see the list which Qubein mentions including:

1. Produce and meat, 

2. Art and cultural treasures,

3. Handicrafts and plant-derived products, and

4. Prescription medication

 

Qubein also recommends that we try to stay on the right side of the law by double-checking for contraband and making use of pre-clearance facilities.

Finally, Qubein warns us of the potential consequences of getting caught going through U.S. Customs with forbidden items:

1.Expect to pay a fine including as much as $500 for a piece of fruit.

2.Get ready for extra screenings on future trips
