If you’ve traveled enough, you’ve probably encountered more than a few airline difficulties. I’ve had my share including a flight delay or cancellation because of the plane’s mechanical problems.
However, my most “memorable” problem was when my luggage was taken off the plane and dumped on the tarmac at the airport just before take-off. While I was on board, the plane had been determined to be “too heavy” because more fuel had been needed. I had spent a lot more money for a one hour direct flight, but I wasn’t informed about this until I had waited hours at the baggage claim area of my destination’s airport. And I didn’t receive my luggage until the afternoon of the next day.
So what’s our recourse? What are our rights for these airline concerns?
Airfare Watchdog has prepared an interesting All Passenger Rights Fold-Up Card.
Three Levels of Rights
Airfare Watchdog says that we have three levels of rights and discusses each one them:
- Rights with Compensation,
- Rights enforced by Government, and
- Rights in Airline Contracts
Rights We Don’t Have
Airfare Watchdog also notes some rights we don’t have including:
- There’s no guarantee for your seat assignment,
- You can’t make them seat your whole family together, and
- The airline and not you owns your frequent flier miles.
