Tomorrow Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her 90th birthday, an event that the UK will surely go crazy for. In a rare opportunity, New Yorkers also will be able to celebrate with special, limited-edition chocolates featuring blackcurrants from the Queen’s garden that are being sold exclusively at Grand Central Terminal.
On April 21th, the Queen’s birthday, Li-Lac Chocolates will sell 90 boxes of The Sandringham Velvet Truffle®, starting at 9:30 a.m. in the store’s Grand Central Market location. The Sandringham Velvet Truffle® incorporates blackcurrants from the Sandringham Estate, the Queen’s country retreat, which have been transformed into truffles by Scotland’s most awarded chocolatier and winner of the Great British Savoury Chocolate challenge, Iain Burnett – The Highland Chocolatier. Ninety boxes will be sold at Selfridges in London and another 90 – which arrive in the United States tonight – will be sold exclusively at Grand Central, an iconic setting befitting a queen.
- Each customer who buys a limited-edition box also will receive a set of specially commissioned, Royal commemorative postage stamps.
- A limited number of chocolate samples will be available at the store even after the 90 boxes sell out.
Li-Lac Chocolates was selected to be the exclusive United States merchant selling these once-in-a-lifetime-birthday chocolates due to its own quality products, its Grand Central location, and for its name – as it turns out, the Queen’s favorite color is lilac. To spread the English joy, Grand Central Market is breaking out in celebration with several vendors, including Murray’s Cheese, Oren’s Daily Roast, Pescatore Seafood Company, and Spices and Tease, offering English-themed products and sales.
