10 U.S. Airports with Worst Summer Delays

My husband, Robert, and I just came back from a great trip to Ireland. Our nonstop Aer Lingus flight from JFK to Dublin helped by eliminating the worry of making a connection. If our night time trip had been a little delayed, it wouldn’t have really affected our plans that much. As it turned out, we got off easy this time and actually arrived early.

I didn’t realize how lucky we really were until I read Fortune.com’s piece on the 10 U.S. airports with the worse summer delays. According to this article, JFK is at the top of the list:

1. JFK

2. Boston

3. Washington-Regan

4. Miami

5. Washington-Dulles

6. Baltimore

7. Atlanta

8. Charlotte

9. Raleigh

10. Pittsburgh

Fortune.com answers the question of how do good airports turn bad:

  • Every one of the airports with the biggest drop in on time performance during the summer is along the East Coast.
  • Four of the 10 (New York, Atlanta, Miami, and Raleigh) are among the 15 wettest cities in the U.S., with summer thunderstorms that throw a wrench in the spokes of busy summer flight schedules.
  • Half are connecting hubs like JFK, are busy hubs where seasonal air traffic can lead to lengthy delays.

Fortune.com also provides guidance on what alternate airports to consider using like Minneapolis, Detroit, Houston, and Dallas.
