A Traveler Asks: What Caribbean Islands Can be Fun to Explore on Foot?

Last week, I had a great time appearing again on WAMC’s Vox Pop program. During this call-in show, a listener mentioned that his 24 year-old son wanted to travel with his girlfriend to a Caribbean island.  The two would be too young to rent a car, so this father wanted to know if there were any Caribbean islands where they could have a nice time traveling around on foot.

What Caribbean islands do you recommend to explore on foot?

Lisa Schwartz, Senior Account Executive for Diamond Public Relations, suggested two Caribbean islands:

Curacao: Wilemstad in Curacao is an ideal walking city. The Queen Emma floating pontoon bridge connects both sides of the downtown area – Punda and Otrabanda – so travelers can easily explore this bustling island city by foot. Pass by the Venezuelan floating market for some fresh fruits and veggies, stop by Marshe Bieu (the old market) for an indigenous meal cooked fresh by locals, visit the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Western hemisphere or head to the shops for some retail therapy.

Aruba: While staying at Aruba Marriott, guests don’t ever have to get behind the wheel. Aside from the diverse activities and restaurants on site, guests can find beach bars, the Aruba Beach Tennis courts and shopping malls all within walking distance down the beach.

Thanks Lisa! And if the right Caribbean island can’t be found, I think that Key West would be a nice alternative. It’s relatively close to the Northeast, has a warm climate, and one can experience great culture, cuisine, and romance all without the use of a car.
