While it’s wonderful to travel with family and established friends, sometimes we need or even desire to travel solo. Check out Stephanie Rosenbloom’s article about finding friendship and possibly romance on the road.
Let us know how you’ve made a friendship while traveling. For me, the easiest place has been while on a plane or simply stuck in an airport waiting for a connection. Ms. Rosenbloom offers tips and also mentions that group hikes, planes, and walking tours are all a way to meet people.
Ms. Rosenbloom also mentions that the travel industry has its own websites and apps with which to meet people including:
Highlight,
Planley,
Skout,
Tripr, and
Couchsurfing.com.
However, safety is always a key consideration. As with any type of travel experience, if approaching someone doesn’t feel right, trust your instinct and refrain from doing so. Ms. Rosenbloom suggests that we always inform our family and friends back home where we’ll be and also memorize words such as “help” in the local language.
