Newburgh, NY: Swimming Fundraiser for Pete Seeger’s River Pool

Last Saturday, Robert and I headed to the Lionel Richie concert at Bethel Woods.  More about this great performance later along with the Crosby Stills and Nash event that had taken place weeks before.

We figured we’d break up the trip from the Capitol District area by having lunch in the waterfront area of Newburgh, New York.  I had only been to this destination one time  before and that was years ago to catch a boat to Bannerman Island.  It seemed like a lovely spot to get a bite to eat before continuing on to Kauneonga Lake, New York.

As we sat down at the outdoor dining area of Captain Jake’s River House on Front Street, groups of  men and women wearing bathing suits and individual numbers on their swim caps or arms, strolled by.  We could also see that kayaks and jet skis were starting to gather around this small portion of the Hudson River.

We soon learned that this was the Swim, a unique fundraiser for River Pool where experienced swimmers were invited to swim about one mile (“72 lengths of a standard 25 yard pool”) across the river from Newburgh to Beacon.  I was told that participants had come from as far away as Japan and England to lend their support.

The  proceeds will be used towards the operation and maintenance of  River Pool off the north shore of the Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park. The organization’s website says that the pool is free to the public, open Tuesday-Sunday, 12-6pm (weather permitting), July through Labor Day. Life Guards are always present when the pool is open. Go to www.riverpool.org for more info.

I’ve participated in heart and hospice walks, but not something like this. Maybe next year!
