Dessert Bar at the James Beard GalaEarlier this month, I was invited to attend the James Beard Awards in NYC. Hosted by Master of Ceremonies, Ted Allen, this is the season’s ultimate culinary event where chefs from around the country receive what is well considered to be the most prestigious culinary awards including Rising Star Chef of the Year, Outstanding Chef and Outstanding Restaurant.

And who to better enjoy this experience with than a fellow foodie, my brother Bruce Stuart, who was in from San Francisco?
The venue was changed this year from Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall to its David H. Koch Theater where the NYC Ballet’s performances are normally held before the dance company travels to its summer home in Saratoga Springs.

The theme this time was “Sounds of the City,” and the James Beard Foundation went all out with musical performances by country music star and Food Network chef ,Trisha Yearwood, as well as by Chris Coleman of Kings of Leon and his wife.
NYC’s former Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Sirio Maccioni, owner of Le Cirque. A list of legendary chefs including Todd English, Daniel Boulud, and David Chang lent their hand as well in ushering in the 2014 James Beard Award recipients
The gala held after the three hour award ceremony consisted of numerous food stations prepared by famous chefs who prepared delicious treats that kept with the theme of music.
