On April 1, 2014 at 5 p m, Christie’s will be auctioning off 180 rare maps from the legendary Chicago dealer Kenneth Nebenzahl, Inc. that they say will offer something for collectors at every level from every corner of the globe.

Along with those treasures, various antique travel guides will be presented for sale as well. What are some of some of the factors used in determining the value of these works? Thomas Lecky, Christie’s Vice President, Department Head of Books and Manuscripts told me that considerations include:

How unique the destination was at the time of publication

The author/explorer who wrote the book, and

The manner in which this explorer conveyed his experiences there.
