One of the most important tips that I’ve learned over the years to receive travel discounts can be summed up in one simple word-Negotiate!
I know that to many of us negotiating may seem very intimidating, especially with big chain hotels, major airlines, high end restaurants, and popular attractions. But if you don’t try, you’ll never find out that, for example, by using your AAA membership or by discovering a special promotion, you’ll be saving a significant percentage of the original cost.
Here are some beginner tips:
1. Be courteous and polite-don’t demand a discount. A smile can, many times, go a long way and, if nothing more, may ease any potential tension.
2. If your concern about a negative reaction is preventing you from asking:
Try a pat saying such as ” Is this your best price?” or “Are there any available promotions that I may not be aware of?” or explain “I found after I paid at (other attractions etc.) that there was a discount, I figured I’d ask.
3. Try to have a mind set that you don’t really need the discount, and if they say no it’s not a big deal. If you can think of it as a sort of game, you may feel less tense and, therefore, be able to maneuver better.
4. If you’ve been a good customer, mention it. On at least one occasion, that earned me a credit at Travelosity.
