Rachel Lee Harris of the New York Times reports that Petfinder.com has named Pet Airways as the most pet-friendly airline over all in North America and the best for large animals. Why? Petfinder.com says the fact this airline flies even large animals in the main cabin was a big factor.
Other recommended pet-friendly airlines:
Jet Blue’s JetPaws program-best amenities.
Frontier Airlines– variety of animals that it will travel with including guines pigs and hampsters
Westjet-most budget conscious

Years ago, about ten, I paid $120 for a round trip ticket for my cat, so that she could sit under my seat.
It was kind of funny because the person next to me had a young child and commented on how I had to pay and they didn’t and they got a free seat for the kid. In comparison it really didn’t make sense, but I was just glad she wasn’t in the baggage area.
poor kitty got her paw stick in her collar at some point after going through security and I didn’t know until 3 or 4 hours later! No collar for kitty after that!

I wouldn’t trust my pet in any cargo situation. Kudos to the folks on these airlines who care about pets. All else – forget it! I’d take a ship first.
