NYC’s High Line: Expansion and Inspiration for Other Cities

Unusual collection of bird houses on Manhattan’s High Line

Last month, Robert and I revisited the High Line, a public park built on a 1.45-mile-long elevated rail structure in Manhattan.  The second stage of this multi-million dollar renovation has been completed so that this structure now runs from Gansevoort Street to West 30th Street on this city’s West Side.

The Friends of the High Line says that, this summer only, it is presenting The Lot, a public plaza below the High Line at 30th Street. The Lot features the High Line Rink, a new, outdoor rollerskating rink, as well as a rotating series of food trucks and The Lot on Tap, an outdoor beer and wine bar operated by Friends of the High Line and Colicchio & Sons.

Please let us know if you’ve been there and what, if anything, you like about it. I personally love the fact that you can easily walk among beautiful gardens so far along this area of Manhattan without being stopped by a traffic light.

Once I get off of the High Line, one of my favorite destinations is Chelsea Market, home to many wonderful eateries, the Food Network and some interesting sample sales.

Kritina Shevory of the New York Times has written an interesting article about the High Line, its impact on the surrounding communities, and how other cities across the country including Chicago, St. Louis, and, Philadelphia would like to duplicate its success with their own elevated tracks.
