How to Make Money By Being Bumped From a Flight

With vacations and better weather finally here, we’re moving into the busy season for travel. But what comes with an increase in airplane passengers ? The nightmare of overbooked planes and the potential of being bumped from your flight.

But what if your goal is to get bumped?

Michelle Higgins of the New York Times has written a great article about people who actually see getting bumped from a flight as a lucrative opportunity, and who actually aim for that experience.

Tips that these people provide include:

1) Be the first in line to tell the agent that you may be willing to give up your seat.

2) Fly through busy airline hubs during peak times

3) Know how much you’re entitled to receive. This can be really important because there are Federal Department of Transportation rules concerning this. Higgins says that, depending on the circumstances, you may be entitled to $400.00 in cash and that you shouldn’t accept any less.

4) Be polite and then ask for more.

And if you don’t want to be bumped, make sure to check in early. Higgins says that if a flight is oversold, the earlier you check in, the less of a chance that you’ll be bumped.
