So sad to hear of Elizabeth Taylor’s passing. For years, my husband’s family has had a little reminder of Liz because they own the summer home that she and Eddie Fisher lived in when Eddie performed at Grossinger’s.
The media has mentioned so much about Liz’s life, loves and work. What was your favorite film of hers? Cleopatra? Cat on a Hot Tin Roof? National Velvet?
Mine is of a little home movie of Liz taken decades ago. I saw it at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor last year as part of their terrific show marking the 100th anniversary of Cartier in America. Over 300 objects were on display including clocks, jewelry, and other works of art.
Along with Grace Kelly’s engagement ring and the Dutchess of Windsor’s broach, this museum showed a beautiful necklace and matching earrings that Mike Todd had given Liz. Next to it was a film of Mike Todd placing this extravegant piece on his wife’s neck.
I loved this film because it wasn’t of a movie star posing in front of a camera. Instead, it simply showed a young woman genuinely thrilled about a gift that had been given by the man she loved.
The first part of this clip from Youtube is the film that I saw. Take a look at Eddie Fisher’s response after Liz receives this gift and then Mike Todd’s reaction.
