What’s my favorite restaurant for very special occasions? The James Beard House which is known as New York City’s best-kept gastronomic secret.
Located in the heart of Greenwich Village, this restaurant is situated in the townhouse of celebrated cookbook author and television personality James Beard. Over 20 dining events are held monthly to showcase culinary artists from around the world, featuring multi-course dinners with wine pairings prepared by guest chefs.
Each of these chefs consider it an honor to cook at this establishment so they have to be really at their best for their own one night event. They bring their own staff and food to prepare the special menu which is published in advance on the restaurant’s website.
A dinner bill can be pricey, but the event usually consists of many courses that collectively take about 3 1/2 hours to 4 hours to complete, and the price includes the alcohol, meal, tip, and tax. Because the tables normally accomodate six seats which fill up very quickly, you may be enjoying the experience with other foodies, often from around the world.

I was a guest at the James Beard house many years ago. Dinner at the Beard house is not just dinner, it’s an experience. My younger brother was a food writer and he was an invited guest and I was the guest of the guest. It was great fun meeting the chef and having him explain all the courses and accompanying wines. My brother died about six months later, a tragic shock to our entire family (he was only 33). I will always treasure that special evening we shared.
