My husband, Robert, and I got the chance to see the Frank Sinatra-Twyla Tharp musical, Come Fly Away which is now playing at Manhattan’s Marquis Theater. I had gotten a great deal on the center orchestra tickets and, although we were in row W, we could see very well.
This production, was a bit different from Movin’ Out, Twyla Tharp’s collaboration with Billy Joel’s music. First, unlike Movin’ Out, Come Fly Away didn’t really tell a full story. Instead, it involved the romantic interludes between different couples. I didn’t feel a connection with the dancers, and, in fact, some members of the audience commented that they were surprised that the Playbill even provided character names.
Second, while the dancing was terrific, it didn’t seem to have the amazing acrobatics that filled the numbers of Movin’ Out.
Despite the differences, however, we had a great time listening to the main attraction of the show which, of course, was the 34 recordings of Frank Sinatra’s unforgettable voice accompanied by a full orchestra.
