I know that this is not a travel topic, but it is so worth reporting. The Family Health Care Decisions Act has finally been enacted into New York State law.
This provision establishes guidelines that provide families and legal guardians, in consultation with medical professionals, the legal right to make critical health care and end-of-life decisions for their loved ones who are incapacitated and unable to make their wishes known.
My husband, Robert, has worked for close to seventeen years to help make this law a reality and, today, Governor Paterson signed the bill at Albany Memorial Hospital.
As noted by the New York State Bar Association, New Yorkers will now have the peace of mind that, in times of great anguish, their family members will be treated with dignity in accordance with their wishes.
