Did anyone travel through JFK early during the evening on February 17th?
MSNBC.com reported yesterday that an air traffic controller brought his elementary-school-aged son to work and let him radio instructions to several pilots. The boy seemed to make five transmissions to pilots preparing to take off. He evidently repeated instructions given to him by his father.
The air traffic controller and a supervisor were suspended after tapings of the calls were posted on the internet.
The union representing air traffic controllers has stated that this was not professional behavior, but the father’s actions have been defended in that it was nice that he brought his child to work .
I think this was a terrible, dangerous thing to do. What do you think?
One response to “Kid Allowed to Direct Air Traffic At JFK!”
Was it wrong? Yes, without a doubt. However, I don’t feel that all this calling for the guy’s job is justified. I’m pretty sure he is regretting the decision immensely as it is. A fine, maybe suspension, but these folks are professionals day in-day out. We all make mistakes. The kid did what, 5 ground clearances? Let the guy learn his lesson, and move on. I think the ATC community will get the picture.
